Donavonn began
working on a small garden inside the apartment. Work was plentiful,
and the two had started building up a nice savings they could call
their own. Through some judicial bribery, they had even convinced
some key people to make it look like Donavonn had entered legally.
On top of this, David and Donavonn were able to afford a
bigger apartment, which proved necessary with the addition of
Kookerloo to the group.
Donavonn's small indoor garden had
started bearing some fruit. Thing was, that something had been
stealing some of it for itself. Donavonn was quite angry of course at
seeing his hard work being stolen by something else. But the main
target for thieving had been a fruit vine that held special meaning
to Donavonn. He had been trying to grow Blue Grapeseed, a fruit that
had grown in his home tribal region of Downunda, but whatever it was
that was attacking his garden kept eating it.
But Donavonn had
a plan for this one. He laid out a trap, specially baited, to catch
the little thief. The cage would catch the thief during the night, or
so he hoped. Cheshire, meanwhile, watched as Donavonn made the
preparations.
"Think it will work, Dona?"
"I
am sure it will, Cheshire. I know Kookerloo doesn't have those sort
of bite marks."
Donavonn made sure the trap was ready,
and then went to bed.
(The next morning)
Donavonn awoke
to a sound.
"YAPYAP!" The sound of pawing and
whimpering told Donavonn that his trap was a success. He peeked
inside, and was caught unawares by how this strange creature looked.
It looked to be a cross of rabbit and fox, with rabbit ears, rabbit
molars (buck teeth), rabbit fur/markings, fox fangs, fox/rabbit paws
(rabbit front, fox back) and fox tail. At first, she looked like a
fox sitting up, but now he wasn't so sure.
"Chesh, you
better come get a look at this!"
Cheshire went to
Donavonn, and got a look at the strange creature in their midst. He
noticed that it was shivering and saw that it was likely scared.
"Dona, the little thing is scared out of its wits."
"I
don't care, Cheshire, I am sick of her eating from my garden!"
As Donavonn reached into the cage, he got bit by the little thing as
it bolted out and hid behind Cheshire. Donavonn glared at Cheshire,
as he held his bloody fingers. "Get out of my way,
Cheshire!"
Cheshire sighed. "Aren't you the least
bit curious as to what it is?" Donavonn's reply was sharp and to
the point. "Not at all." Cheshire kept trying. "Look,
maybe, just maybe, we should try to find out more. Look, Donavonn,
sheathe the blades!" Donavonn growled at him.
"Donavonn,
don't forget this IS my apartment." Donavonn grumbled and
reluctantly sheathed his sword. Meanwhile, Kookerloo was having a
conversation with the new visitor.
(The following is
translated from the animal speech used by Kookerloo and the
creature)
Kookerloo: The cat is Cheshire, the dingo is
Donavonn, and I am Kookerloo. And you are?
???: Rabbina. Just
call me Rabbie. You are a bird, one is a cat, and the other is a dog.
So why aren't you worried about being eaten?
Kookerloo:
Because they spend so much time trying to kill each other that they
don't look twice at me. You look like a cross between a rabbit and a
fox. How on earth do you exist?
Rabbie: How do you have a
Cheshire Cat outside a storybook?
Kookerloo: Touché.
Cheshire
and Donavonn watched the exchange between the two. "Looks like
Kookerloo can speak to the little…whatever it is. Well, seeing as
she looks like a cross between a rabbit and a fox, I guess we can
call her a Rabbox, and for now, I will just call her Rabbie."
David got his shoes on, and put Rabbie carefully inside a
backpack.
"Where are you going, cat?"
"To
the library. I gotta find out what Rabbie here is."
Donavonn
smirked. "Ohhh, you are just using this as an excuse to see
Danielle again, aren't you?" The wet towel thrown at Donavonn's
face affirmed his suspicions. "David, suck it up and ask her out
already!" As David left, Donavonn sighed.
Another day
with just Kooks for company.
(An hour later, at the
library)
Danielle Kolsson was working at the desk, her usual
spot at the library, when David came in. He was a regular who often
perused the internet and borrowed a fair number of books on martial
arts. She was just getting off her shift when he went to the
computers, but felt the need to help out.
"David,
anything I can do for you?"
David was surprised to see
Danielle approach him. "Well, yesterday, I found this strange
species of animal yesterday, and I need to see if it is related to
anything in Cumbria." Danielle nodded. "What does it look
like?"
"A cross between a rabbit and a fox."
Danielle frowned, wondering if David was pulling her leg. Just then,
a bolt of orange came out of David's backpack, and began rubbing
against Danielle's ankles. Upon further examination, Danielle noticed
that the rabbox was orange with light gold segments, with a light
beige/pinkish color on the inner ears, pawpads and belly.
"AWWWWW!"
Danielle picked up Rabbie and gave her a hug. "She is so
adorable! Ummm…can I ask you out, David?" David blushed when
he heard Danielle say that. "Ummm, sure, Danielle."
Danielle smiled. "Meet me back here in a couple of
hours."
"Okay." Just as she left, Rabbie looked
up at him with a cute look that basically said "Okay, I got you
the girl, you can feed me now!" David smiled at Rabbie. "Okay,
you win. I will feed you first, then get ready for the date. Welcome
to our odd little group."
END.
